NEWS RELEASE - For Immediate Release

WinterGreen Fine Craft Market encourages Emerging Artists

Emerging Artist: Dawn Teasdale www.dawnmteasdale.com
The Saskatchewan Craft Council (SCC) welcomes six new up-and-coming artists to our Emerging Artist Market Experience Program at WinterGreen Fine Craft MarketThese Emerging Artists all have less than five years of craft market experience, but are committed to pursuing a career in craft. Our Emerging Artists for WinterGreen this year are: Dawn M. Teasdale (jewellery), Angelle Dancsok (fibre art), Mark Wells (jewellery), Sonia Griffiths (ceramics), Judith Wera (mixed media) and Gary von Kuster (wood).

"As a new artist, showing my work and being able to speak to people viewing it is invaluable. It's delightful to make a connection with someone new who appreciates your aesthetic," says Dawn Teasdale.

This program allows Emerging Artists to participate in SCC markets to expand their contacts within the Saskatchewan craft community. If they enjoy the experience, they can apply to become an SCC Juried artist.

"I am really hoping to get a bit of experience selling in a larger market and get a chance to talk with people more and tell them about my work," says Mark Wells. "Although I've been making and selling jewellery for years, I have almost no experience with selling in person at shows or in a store."

Although our formal jury process is bypassed in order to introduce these young artists to SCC markets, there still is a selection process and these artists all design and create high quality Fine Craft.

"Being an Emerging Artist allowed me to test my product and my booth design in a low risk, supportive environment. The other artists were so encouraging," said Vivian Orr, who attended WinterGreen in 2012 as an Emerging Artist and is now an SCC Juried ceramic artist.

Jewellery artist Katerina Pappas was an Emerging Artist in 2012, and will be attending WinterGreen for the second time as a Juried professional artist this year. As well, printmaker Rowan Pantel was an Emerging Artist at last year's WinterGreen and is coming back this year as a Juried artist. The SCC values education and mentorship and are happy to support Emerging Artists!
